[lateinisch bifidus »gespalten«] die, - -, Rachis|chisis, angeborene Hemmungsfehlbildung, bei der die Wirbelbögen unvollständig geschlossen sind (Spaltwirbel, Wirbelspalt); tritt meist nach außen gerichtet (dorsal) und im Kreuzbein- oder Lendenteil der Wirbelsäule auf (Neuralrohrdefekt). Bei der oft symptomlosen Spina bifida occulta sind keine oder nur geringfügige Veränderungen sichtbar (Überbehaarung, Hauteinziehung über dem Defekt), bei der Spina bifida aperta kommt es zu einer Vorwölbung der Rückenmarkhäute (Meningozele), teils auch zu Fehlbildungen des Rückenmarks. Sie ist mit neurologischen Defekten (Harnentleerungs-, Sensibilitätsstörungen) verbunden und tritt auch zusammen mit anderen Fehlbildungen (Fußdeformitäten, Anenzephalie) auf. Die Diagnose wird durch Röntgenuntersuchung gestellt, die Behandlung erfolgt meist operativ.
